A very fun but, SERIOUS interactive workshop on the main reasons why the
drop out rate is so high. Interactive is the operative word here, as the group
goes through: Academic challenges, Pregnancy, Alcohol/Usage, Drug Abuse, Homesickness, Financial Issues, Criminal Charges, Relationships, Over Involvement of Clubs & Activities, Partying, Adult Living, and STD's.
Student participation, scenarios based on true stories, posters, statistics,
and video are utilized.
Breaking the Cycles of Low Self - Esteem
Emotional and thought provoking workshop that deals with why people want and need the 7 A's. (i.e... Affection. Attention, Adoration, Affirmation, Approval, Acceptance, and Applause.). More importantly, when has someone crossed the line between healthy and unhealthy need of the 7A's and what costly price is someone willing to pay to feel or receive them. Too many students seek the 7'as in unhealthy ways and it really speaks to their self-esteem levels. And so , we deal with it - head on, in this workshop.

Enjoyed by audiences of all ages, the versatile presentation can fulfill a vast aray of programming needs. It is rooted in poems, monologues, prose pieces, soliloquies and other classic literary favorites; music and historic video footage, unless otherwise noted, undergird all presentations . "Power of the Tongue" is a 60-75 min. multi - media performance anchored in poems, prose pieces, soliloquies, monologues and other classic literary favorites. Music, costume changes, and historic video footage undergird performance. If requested, question and answer session follows the performance. Works performed include " Upon Being Brought From Africa to America" - Phyllis Wheatley, " The Prodigal Son" - James Weldon Johnson, " I, Too, Sing America " - Langston Hughes, " W.E.B. and Booker T " - Dudley Randall, " I AM A Black" - Gwendolyn Brooks, " For My People" - Margaret Walker Alexander, " What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black" - Margaret Taylor Burroughs , "Still I Rise" - Maya Angelou, "Improvisations" - Sonia Sanchez, " Southern Hospitality" - Nichole L. Shields, "Strange Fruit" - Billie Holiday and works by the performance poet herself. Upon request, " Power of the Tongue" classroom guide is available for instructors.
